WRITERS REVEALED: TREASURING THE INTERPRETIVE ENCOUNTER
Writers Revealed, presented at HOTA in collaboration with the British Library and the National Portrait Gallery, London, invited audiences to encounter six centuries of literary figures through the intersection of the written word and the visual image.
The project’s primary design challenge was not form, but engagement.
Studio Starr’s role was to develop a graphic identity and interpretive structure that could hold this material with clarity and care. The aim was to create a system that encouraged access without compromise. This meant treating design as a supporting structure, not a simplification tool.
DESIGNING FOR CONTEMPLATION
The visual system for Writers Revealed was designed around three anchor principles: mystique, gravitas and restraint.
Restraint shaped the palette. Beige walls were chosen deliberately. Compared to the visual intensity of white walls, even under low light, the beige provided a softened environment, allowing the works to emerge with greater focus and subtlety. The palette was developed in collaboration with exhibition architects Zuzana&Nicholas.
Gravitas was expressed through the treatment of objects and the environments that held them. Each element was presented for close consideration rather than a transient glance. The lighting strategy reinforced this, guiding attention while maintaining the overall tone of quiet engagement.
Mystique was carried through the brand typography. The typographic identity added a quiet sense of character and swagger — a subtle nod to the personalities of the writers themselves. The word ‘revealed’ appears through the spacing of the larger ‘writers’ letterforms, a direct visual reference to both the exhibition’s spatial structure and its interpretive logic.
AN INHERITED FLOORPLAN, REWORKED
The exhibition took place within an existing gallery space, but one that we quickly recognised echoed the structure of a book.
Radiating outward from a circular foyer, the freestanding walls opened like pages from a central spine. These became a foundational tool for wayfinding. Each section began with a blue title panel, clearly marking the point of thematic entry. Where appropriate, the opposite end of walls featured a vertical typographic bookend. These elements acted as navigational anchors, maintaining spatial orientation without explicitly directing visitor flow.
The space itself was fully interpretive. Interpretation was continuous rather than compartmentalised. Every part of the experience was structured to hold content at a consistent, medium-density interpretive level.
STRUCTURING ENGAGEMENT
This was a text-rich exhibition. Every object label included extended interpretation. Text hierarchies provided modulation, allowing visitors to move between summary and depth as needed.
Introductory panels offered thematic context. Author biographies accompanied portraits. Object labels provided context and insight, adding interpretive richness that clarified the significance of each piece and its contribution to the broader narrative.
This created a layered interpretive environment, one where audiences could skim, dwell or dive deep. The system worked like editorial scaffolding, offering multiple entry points without fragmenting the experience.
Quotes from authors were used as spatial anchors. These were not decorative inclusions. They acted as tonal guides, reinforcing the presence of voice and narrative throughout the exhibition.
WHAT THIS REAFFIRMED
Design for a highly interpretive exhibition must create the conditions for engagement. It must allow complexity to remain legible and meaningful without overwhelming the audience or diluting the content.
